The runways of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week have seen relatively tame creations from designers since the spring/summer 2012 shows began last week.

Bold colors, yes. Dramatic make-up, naturally. But over-the-top concoctions have been scarce, vacated for pieces that women can (sort of) imagine blending into their wardrobes.

Enter Nicki Minaj.

The pop artist, who dragged a tail of stuffed animals behind her during the MTV Video Music Awards, sat precariously close to fashion empress Anna Wintour during Carolina Herrera’s runway show, decked in neon pom-poms.

The ironic imagery created a stir on its own, but the similarity of Minaj’s ensemble to a piece by a young designer may also make a few waves. The style Web site Fashionista.com is reporting that Jessica Rogers of SomedayNewYorker has been creating clothing made of the same puff balls, and previously has been contacted by Minaj’s stylists about the garments.

Puff balls weren’t the only unconventional item found on Minaj’s outfits during her fashion week appearances. Other random objects include a purple pretzel, what looks like an egg shell and tiger ears.
